Progress continues at the Majestic Cinema, with important steps in conservation planning, community engagement, and preparations for key restoration work. A pop-up information center has become the central hub for connecting with the local community, while international presentations and new funding opportunities are driving the project forward.
While structural challenges persist, a comprehensive conditions assessment in the Fall of 2024 paved the way for a rehabilitation plan for the art deco gem. Plans to modernize and restore the 1950s building exterior doors and windows, facade, roof, and ventilation are complete. Access to original architectural plans and documentation has been limited, so the team – led by CHiFA’s partner organization Hifadhi Zanzibar – has been in touch with the grandson of the local architect, Dayalji Pitamber Sachania, for archival materials. The team has also recreated historic plans based on in-depth physical investigation of the site. Current conditions photo documentation has added insight to the conditions assessment. Some work will require the tenants to vacate the building, but continuous activities conducted on site by Hidafhi Zanzibar and its partners are creating excitement about the future of the space.
The Majestic Cultural Hub is already realizing its mission to bring arts and community together under one roof by co-hosting film screenings by local filmmakers to showcase Zanzibar’s storytelling heritage to residents and visitors. A temporary Reading Room dedicated to promoting and celebrating Zanzibari writers has been setup by The Zanzibar Renaissance Literary Society. Anchor organizations for future use of the space include Busara Productions (organizer of Sauti za Busara is East Africa’s premier music festival), Reclaim Women’s Space (a female empowerment project), and Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF).
