Marking Milestones: Reflecting on the 2022 World Heritage Plaque Unveiling

This week marks two years since the unveiling of the World Heritage Site in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley.

Dr. Nelly Robles García and team gathered with the local community on October 28, 2024 for a ceremony and parade to celebrate the cultural and natural resources of the area. The celebration marked the anniversary of the dedication of the plaque commemorating inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List

In 2022, CHiFA had the privilege of joining Dr. Robles Garcia and leaders from the local communities to unveil this marker of the area’s significance.

Deep inside a forest of cacti and shrubs is installed the plaque recognizing the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve as World Heritage. Its mounting [in the remote area] near the prehistoric Cave of the Little Hands (Cueva de las Manitas) is a testament to the determination of the local communities to raise awareness about the site, and the area’s other compelling natural and cultural features to create new tourism to the little-visited area, northeast of Oaxaca.
